2010, A Year in Review with KSA Interiors

“If you have knowledge,
let others light their candles in it.”
Margaret Fuller (1810-1950), American journalist, critic, and advocate for women’s education and the right to employment.

At KSA, we could not agree more! 2010 has been an eventful year for the KSA team. We have had the opportunity to participate in some amazing activities with our clients, our colleagues, and our professional design organizations. Our team continues to learn more about our ever-evolving industry and strives every day to share this knowledge with our clients and teammates.

As the holiday season approaches, our team would like to take this opportunity to share our experiences with you. We hope you enjoy this review of 2010!

A WINTER OF WISDOM

Strategic Planning and Professional Development

“By enabling individual growth through self assessment, goal setting, and education, employees will become self-motivated to enhance their personal professional development and KSA’s development as a whole.”

Following the goals determined in our Strategic Planning Retreat, the KSA Interiors team developed four internal task forces to work together to promote standards in Professional Development, Communications, Design Processes and Procedures, and Office Processes and Procedures. Each task force collaborated to build the KSA roadmap to enhance the quality of KSA’s professional service knowledge and business operations.

If you have visited our office this year, you may have noticed one of the first projects completed by the Professional Development and Communications task forces. The simple but brilliant addition of categorized end caps to our product and resource library has not only been an impactful tool to better organize our heavily trafficked working space, but has also served as a space for information sharing internally and for our office visitors!

The informational categories are:

New Product: a destination for new product information to be introduced by manufacturers and suggestions of products from colleagues
KSA Classifieds: a home for any items, products, or events from the community or personal ventures

Events: where to find events being hosted by professional organizations and manufacturers pertaining to the interior design industry

Shout Outs: a place for recognition of team members who have done a spectacular job on a recent project, award, or promotion for KSA

CEUs: CEU opportunities hosted by professional organizations and manufacturers

Spotlight on Design: a display of images and articles for spaces that inspire you

Rep 411: multi-line rep information, new rep information, or newly represented lines

Green/LEED Updates: information pertaining to green products, LEED training/courses or green events and projects

All of our task forces are responsible for driving initiatives for our firm such as the development of our mentoring program, presentations of the most current industry information allowing our staff to become experts in each field of service, and staying current on resource trends within our industry. We look forward to learning even more from our task forces in the coming year.

FUN FACT: Exciting News Hits Our Studio!
Interior Design Magazine, January 20, 2010

“In June 2009, Shaw Contract Group unveiled its new website. Shortly thereafter, the “See the Bigger Picture” campaign was launched to promote the new site. Joanna Yates, a designer with Richmond-based KSA Interiors, was randomly selected as the winner of the campaign, winning a seat at the 25th annual Interior Design Hall of Fame gala and a ticket the next night to the magazine’s 2009 Best of Year award celebration. Following her trip to New York, Yates sat down with her Shaw Contract Group benefactors to discuss her trip, goals, and the design industry.”

A Function for Fashion
When spring was just around the corner, a few members of our design team attended the Michael Taylor Couture Fashion show at the Lucky Strike building in Downtown Richmond. They were able to not only see a wonderful fashion show, but also tour Odell’s new space.

OUR STUPENDOUS SPRING

Steal Away with Steelcase
Cameron Stiles, Melissa Moseley, Heather Croy, Katie Hammer and Erin Riggan had the pleasure of taking an educational trip to the Steelcase Headquarters in April. While in Grand Rapids, MI they enjoyed great hospitality, informative CEUs, and a grand tour of the Meyer May House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Best in the World!
The 2010 Strategic Planning Retreat brought the KSA team together to discuss how we strive to be the “Best in the World” for our clients every day! In an interactive presentation, KSA Interiors' Associate, Christopher M. Good, CID, ASID, LEED AP, shared relative insight from several inspirational authors. We also enjoyed learning a bit more about each other as individuals through a variety of group exercises and presentations.

The Latest in Lighting
In May, our expert lighting specialist Beth Dickerson, CID, ASID, LEED AP attended the Lightfair International 2010 Expo and brought back TONS of information on lighting design and trends for the coming year.  In case you missed it, you can read a review of her experience here!

A SUMMER OF CELEBRATION

The Desk of the Future

In an effort to improve the design of student desks, an ambitious group of students from Hopewell High School, led by their innovative and dedicated teacher, Andrei Dacko, were selected as one of only 15 groups in the country to create and present a new product of their own invention at MIT’s EurekaFest held in mid-June 2010.

KSA served as one of the team’s resources to help with research and their product display at MIT. To learn more about this amazing group of students and our adventures with them, click here!

The 2010 GSA Training Conference & Expo

Braving the summer heat and packed convention centers, Kim Schoenadel, CID, ASID and President/CEO of KSA Interiors and Lorri Finn, CID, IIDA, LEED AP and Managing Principal at KSA attended the 2010 GSA Training Conference & Expo in Orlando, Florida.  KSA holds a Multiple Award Schedule for Comprehensive Furniture Management Services through the General Services Administration.

An Exotic Gala for the Interior Design Excellence Awards
The 2010 Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) gala event was held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond, Virginia. This event is held annually to award design excellence for projects completed by members of ASID Virginia, The Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers and IIDA, the Virginia /West Virginia Chapter of the International Interior Designer Association (IIDA).

With the goal of turning the appearance of the IDEA venue into that of an exotic getaway in India, the KSA team worked with the ASID Awards committee members to prepare the Bollywood- themed decorations.  There were bright and colorful paper flowers placed throughout the venue and tiered cupcake plates with delicious cupcakes from a local shop, Two Sweet, served as table centerpieces.  Attendees joined in the festive activities at the "Bling Booth" where they could adorn themselves with bangles, bindis, and temporary henna tattoos, and much more.  The RVA Hoop Lovers also made an appearance at the Awards gala, positioned throughout the space to perform hoop dancing to Bollywood themed music playing in the auditorium and corridors.  Read a complete review about this event here!

OUR FIRST-CLASS FALL

Global Interior Design & Graphics

Through a unique international opportunity for KSA, our team completed the design for Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering international laboratory for the Shandong University in Eastern China. The goal of this interior design and environmental graphics project was to give this international Virginia Tech satellite location a brand reflecting the Virginia Tech campus, Shandong University history, and the ground-breaking research being conducted at both locations. Stay tuned to our blog for a full Project Spotlight on this exciting project!

"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!"
In October, KSA hosted its FOURTH annual pumpkin carving evening in preparation for Halloween! Family and friends joined our team in the creation of detailed jack-o-lanterns and illuminated designs ranging from traditional smiling faces to exciting new characters like Batman, Little Big Planet, a world hula-hooper, and a few pets!

NeoCon East 2010

In late October, our design team attended the 8th annual NeoCon East design exposition and conference for the mid-atlantic design community. With more than 250 exhibitors and over 30 CEU-accredited seminars and association forums, our certified interior designers returned with a more than substantial amount of production information.

A Day of Decades
If you can't tell, we really enjoy a good excuse to let our creative spirits fly! For Halloween this year, we were each inspired by our choice of decade. If we get this creative with our costumes, imagine what we can do for your design needs!!

We hope that you have enjoyed this glimpse of our year and have enjoyed 2010 as well! May your holiday season and New Year be filled with much joy, happiness, and success. We look forward to working with you in the coming year and encourage you to share your 'light'!
